Surfside in Lake George: A Fun Place of Lodging for All
Like most people, I’ve been having a hard time letting go of summer. Although Colorado’s high peaks were frosted with the first significant snows of the season last week, here in the northeast where I’m currently based, the weather is gorgeous. Really. And the forecast continues to be fabulous for the upcoming week or more. I’m talking low to mid-80s glorious!
With this kind of sunshine, warmth and humidity, you can stick more than your big toe in beautiful Lake George, New York, one of the most heralded bodies of water in the Adirondacks. I did just that last weekend on a little getaway that I enjoyed toute seule (that means all alone, which is just what I very much needed).
I picked Surfside on the Lake because I had heard they recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation and I knew I wanted to check it out. Plus, I remembered their iconic roadside sign from many many summers spent at Lake George. My curiosity was piqued on all fronts and I was longing to find out what kind of a property stretched all the way down to the lake behind their fun-spirited sign, one eye-catching piece of roadside architecture among many on the busy route that skirts the west side of the lake.
I was delighted! I’m sure I was the only single lady in the place yet I felt right at home. To me, at Lake George, it’s all about the lake. So I spent many hours lolling on their sandy beach, sunning, reading, relaxing and just gazing out onto the water. I bopped from my lounger to their multi-colored Adirondack chairs to my setup outside of my deluxe hotel suit where I enjoyed sipping tea in the morning and wine at lunch (just a little).
Most of the accommodations have balconies at Surfside as well as efficiencies, which makes spending time there oh-so easy. If you happen to find yourself in a unit that doesn’t have either of these amenities, there are plenty of picturesque places on the property to hang out, do some grilling, have drinks and enjoy the beauty of the lake.
Between the vivid, retro-inspired interiors of the newly built and/or renovated lodgings and the brightly-hued umbrellas, beach and terrace furnishings, it’s a super cheery resort.
And, of course, the scene on the lake is tops. The array of boats that passes before you makes you feel like you have the front seat at a super happy parade. The Minne Ha Ha, the darling paddlewheel boat of the Lake George Steamboat Company, may be considered the biggest and brightest float of them all. Her regular passage in front of Surfside amuses one and all. If you stand and watch her chuff by and listen to the melodic tunes of her renowned calliope and steam whistles and stacks, you’ll feel like you don’t have a care in the world.
Yes, no matter the age, Surfside taps into the kid-like spirit in all of us. Plus, this 150-unit lakeside establishment is located just a short walk from Lake George Village, a family fun land that’s been drawing crowds since the motoring days of the forties and fifties.
Somehow it’s reassuring to know that that same Surfside sign has been attracting folks since the early days, long before the existence of cellphones and the internet. Just like Lake George, it’s still as joyful and beautiful as ever.
Know that Surfside is offering some great fall packages; check them out here. As of last weekend, the leaves had hardly begun to change. Typically peak foliage viewing occurs around Columbus Day weekend although I’d say it might be a little late this year, since the weather has been so warm. No matter, you can bet on one heck of a color fest at Surfside year-round and most especially from now through mid November.
