Finding Serenity at Tea Island Resort in Lake George
As I wrote in A Cancer Journey of Heartbreak, Love, Resilience and Hope, these have been trying times. But there’s nothing like changing up your surroundings to gain a better outlook on a situation. Or even better, to forget about your problems–even for one brief shining moment–all together. I find this easiest to do in nature, in a spectacular setting such as the one that seizes all your senses, one amply provided at Lake George, New York in the Adirondacks.
Seeking solace at Lake George is not a new concept to me because for over forty years my family owned a house on this pristine body of water. There’s something very cleansing about her silky waters whether you’re swimming in them, floating on them or gazing at them from the shore; they sooth with a penetrating calm. Sitting on her shores listening to the water lap up onto a beach, a seawall or a dock is to me one of the most transcending sounds I know.
Ever since the family home was sold a couple of years ago, I’ve enjoyed experiencing this “Queen of American Lakes” from different vantage points. I love staying in hotels and have been delighted to find that there are many good ones on Lake George.
Tea Island Lodge certainly ranks as one of the best, especially if you like water sports. They boast a terrific collection of all kinds of fun toys, including kayaks, canoes, SUPs and even a rowboat, all available free of charge to hotel guests. I stayed here a few weeks ago and delighted in two excursions: one where I rowed around the lovely little, privately-owned Tea Island; the other where I paddled up the west side of the lake in the kayak. My alone time on the water restored and rejuvenated me much like I had hoped.
I also lolled on the beach and read a book that a very caring friend sent me. With every page turned–as with every oar and paddle that cut through the water–I gained strength and optimism, empowering feelings that might have taken a week to conjure up at a fancy self help center out West. No, as the Native Americans discovered many years ago, Lake George is a great healer. And since it was the first part of September, I was grateful to have been able to take a few dips in the lake as well.
I had other fun times, too. I sipped a beer and nibbled on chips and salsa atop the resort’s boathouse deck upon arrival, took myself out to a favorite restaurant for dinner and then enjoyed tea back out on the deck the next morning. Before I left, I lunched on dinner leftovers outside my beautiful room in an effort to soak up just one more lake view to take away with me. It felt like a full almost twenty-four hours!
I was hardly in my room but when I was, I delighted in its fresh and airy décor and tasteful appointments.
What a find this was, this Tea Island Resort! I hope to find myself back there again soon. I can only imagine how pretty it is right now with the leaves beginning to turn. The foliage is rather late this year and peak in the Adirondacks will likely not hit until well into next week. I checked the forecast and the weather is expected to be pretty close to perfect with highs in the mid to upper 70s by mid-week next week.
Hmmmm, somehow I feel the Adirondacks calling me… Plus, continued self care is a must these days. Hope you will be able to take care of yourself in a similar fashion during this golden fall season and throughout the year.
Tea Island Resort remains open through the end of October; they reopen mid-May.
